The New Yoga Trend You Must Follow

Surya Namaskar is the most traditional and well-known component of Yoga. It translates to “Sun Salutations” and is a form of exercise that focuses on each and every muscle of the body. Traditionally, Surya Namaskar is done on a mat but it becomes highly difficult for people with Arthritis and other knee and back issues to perform these salutations.

Hence, a variation of these exercises can be practised, called the “Chair Surya Namaskar”. This method of Sun Salutations provides the aid of a chair so people with such ailments can perform them without any difficulty. The cycle of Yoga remains the same but is done while sitting on a chair.

This method of Surya Namaskar is beneficial for senior citizens as now, they can avail the benefits of the traditional Surya Namaskar while not overstraining themselves. Chair Surya Namaskar also helps improve digestion, reduce body swelling and enhances breathing capacity.

The steps followed in Chair Surya Namaskar are:

  1. Sit on the chair with legs shoulder-length apart and hands folded.
  2. Gently raise your hands up and bend backwards while maintaining a rigid posture.
  3. Bring your hands down to touch the floor beside your feet while making a gentle attempt to touch your nose to your knees.
  4. Push yourself back and bring right leg up onto the chair while holding it with your hands and lean your head back.
  5. Bring your head forward and make a gentle attempt to touch the knee of the raised leg.
  6. Bring your leg down and push back raising your hands as in step 2.
  7. Lean forward while trying to touch the floor with your hands as in step 3.
  8. Now, bring your left leg onto the chair and repeat the cycle.

It is generally suggested to repeat the entire cycle 10-12 times a day before having your breakfast.

Surya Namaskar benefits the body in more than one way. The most important benefit of all- it keeps you fit and flexible. Chair Surya Namaskar offers you the same benefits with the comfort of a chair to support you. It has just as many benefits as the traditional version.

Overall, it is a healthy habit to inculcate mild Yoga to your morning routine. It kickstarts your mornings and also displays notable benefits in the long run.
