Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases, the infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.
Many individuals who get coronavirus will experience nothing worse than seasonal flu symptoms, but the overall profile of the disease, including its mortality rate, looks more serious.
For flu, some hospital guidelines define exposure as being within six feet of an infected person who sneezes or coughs for 10 minutes or longer. However, it is possible to be infected with shorter interactions or even by picking the virus up from contaminated surfaces, although this is thought to be a less common route of transmission.
Researchers at the Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity in Melbourne were able to test blood samples at four different time points in an otherwise healthy woman in her 40s, who presented with COVID-19 and had mild-to-moderate symptoms. Her condition was managed through intravenous fluid rehydration without supplemental oxygenation. No antibiotics, steroids or antiviral agents were used. The research team was able to use her blood samples to map the response of her immune system to the virus.
As reported by Dailymail, UK, It was found that-
“Three days after the patient was admitted, a large population of several immune cells was found in the blood, which is often a tell-tale sign of recovery during seasonal influenza infection, so it was predicted that the patient would recover in three days, which is what happened.”
Professor Katherine Kedzierska, a leading influenza immunology researcher in Melbourne said-
“A Robust Immune Response was associated with clinical recovery”
