Who is a good care manager for my parents?

, Caregiver

Your parents are refusing to move in with you. They are getting old, and you are increasingly seeing that their quality of life is going down. The house is not kept organized and tidy as before, they are going out less, the house help is becoming dominant. You hear a certain resignation in their voice whenever you speak to them.

What do you do? There are care programs, now offered professionally, to manage various aspects of care for parents in such cases. While choosing one for your parents, look for something which bases the care on the relationship, rather than activities and transactions. The main reason for this is that, with age, and lack of trusted service providers, parents tend to delay calling for a service. Whereas a relationship-based program has a provision to observe a need, and then ask for a service to be delivered.

Relationship-based Care Programs

The relationship-based care programs, are led by a care manager, who is the primary physical connection between your parents, you and the organization. The quality of care manager hence becomes a major determinant of the quality of care that your parents receive.

The first and foremost thing to look for is, a trustworthy company, with professional management, which has the right vision for elder care. Such companies, will not only hire the right care managers but also build a suitable network of reliable and quality service providers to support the care manager in working with your parents.

A good care manager enjoys meeting and spending time with the elders. This helps in two ways, in case your parents are resistant to external service like this, the care managers’ behaviour puts them at ease and makes the program more acceptable. Secondly, your parents feel more at ease to reach out, when they need anything, usually just to hear a warm voice.

Then next point to look at is if the care manager can bridge the gap between current “way of doing things” and the method that your parents are used to. For example, if they need a taxi, they are used to standing on the roadside with their arm up to hail a taxi or call the local taxi stand to send them a car. Now a more efficient and cheaper way is Uber or Ola. Similarly, for banking, bill payments, connecting with friends, even communicating with you. All these basic requirements have evolved and your parents need a helpful person to use these a few times.

With a good care manager, backed by a professional company, it creates a right blend of professionalism and caring touch. This helps your parents accept the external service and use it effectively for their requirements. This assures you a peace of mind and ensures that when you visit them next, you go out there and have fun, instead of merely getting some pending work out of the way. Do try and meet the care manager on your next visit to your parents.
