Having a spic and span house is not just good for the eyes, but a healthy habit. We are generally used to doing the everyday cleaning, mopping, and dusting. But the major cleaning happens only once in a year or so, like spring cleaning, Diwali cleaning, etc. In India, we also do a ‘fix’ cleaning. This means that when family or friends are visiting, especially, the kinds who may stay for a few days, then we quickly get into an act of fixing the piled up stuff lying around. A round of quick fix cleaning happens, with things being just stuffed out of sight, etc. So, here are ten tips that you can follow to keep your house spic and span.

Vacuuming the furniture

Even with everyday dusting, the living room furniture like sofa and couches, especially the ones with cushions that cannot be removed, will have dust piled up. This dust can cause allergies and other health issues. Hence, once in a fortnight at least, these furniture needs to be vacuum cleaned. You may be surprised at the amount of dust that this yields, as the naked eye cannot see it. This can be done with other such furniture as well as any carpets around the house as well. Doormats should be cleaned thoroughly every day.

Using space wisely

Every available space in the house should be used carefully, for storage and other purposes. So, if you have corners, or under the staircase kind of space, you can figure out and find matching storage cupboards that fit in there.

Make your bed every day

The bedroom is no exception, and the bed should be made every day, as soon as you get up. Leaving it for later, usually means, that it will remain undone. This should be followed by all family members, including kids.

Use baskets

Baskets for laundry and even for storing stuff can be used. This makes the area look much clean and tidy and also the things will remain organized. Organizing things around the house such that everything has a place is important. If a place is assigned, then all family members will know and follow that it should go into that space only.

Clothes should not be strewn around

Whether the ones yet to be washed or the ones that have been done, clothes should be left lying around. It makes for a very untidy sight. Washed and dried clothes should be neatly folded and kept in a place, for ironing if required or in the cupboards, if ironing is not required.

Organize the wardrobe

The wardrobe should be neatly organized in such a way that there is a place for everything. The undies should be in one place, the formal wear, the casual wear, the ties, the sarees etc. can have a separate place so that you know, where to find what and do not have to search for stuff. Also, the dressing table too can be neatly arranged so that the stuff on it is easily accessible like the aftershaves, perfumes, combs, watches, accessories, and the likes.

Use a shoe rack

It is important to use a shoe rack and organize footwear neatly, even if it is not an open one. This gives a good look as well as, makes it easy to pick one out.

Organize the kitchen

The kitchen too is an important part of the house. This has to be kept clean by organizing the various foods and groceries neatly in designated places. The gas stove especially has to be kept neat and clean. With our Indian style of cooking, the kitchen tiles and the gas hob are likely to get dirty. Hence, this has to be cleaned daily, or a layer keeps forming and this is not just a bad sight, but unhealthy as well.

Maintain a neat work desk

Just like how you could be confused if you keep saving everything on your computer desktop, the same is the case with your work table. Keep things filed and piled neatly for easy access and a better look. This makes for a better working also.

Dining table

If you are using a dining table, maintain it neatly with daily cleaning. Keep your fruit bowls on the same for a good look, and you may even have a flower vase or so.
