The cinema theatres are closed in almost all states due to the Coronavirus pandemic, while a few states are thinking of opening it up from this week. Even if it is opened up, it remains to be seen, how many staunch theatre lovers will end up going to watch the movies. There will be new norms set for screening, and perhaps, movie watching in the theatre may never be the same again. Experts suggest that despite vaccines coming into the market by this year-end, we may have to live with COVID-19 for quite some time.
In such a scenario, many production houses decided to go with the Over The Top (OTT) option to release their movies. The first major release in this list happened to be that of the young and versatile late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s Dil Bechara. Incredibly, this got the biggest ever OTT opening across the world with 95 million views in 24 hours, which would have equalled a Rs.2000 crore opening in theatres, according to some industry sources!
OTT refers to the streaming of content (movies, series, shows, concerts, sports and much more) over the Internet-based platforms. OTT can be accessed by any smartphone user with an Internet connection. Many rural users now have access to good quality content on their phones, and content comes in almost all regional languages. The various distributors like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Disney+Hotstar, SonyLIV, Voot, AltBalaji, SunNxt, Zee5, Hoichoi, BIGFlix (Reliance), etc. provide multiple subscription options to consumers.
A few Internet providers like the Reliancefibre and Airtel are also providing bundled offers of OTT content along with their Internet packs. Overall, people are now having access to multiple choices in content with reasonable subscription rates. This is perhaps why the production houses decided to release even a few of the new movies through the OTT platforms. Apart from the movies, these platforms provide constant web series content that is engaging, covering all genres.
