It’s Christmas and Christians, across the world are preparing to celebrate the birth of Lord Jesus Christ. As we all know, Jesus Christ, allowed himself to be crucified for the greater good of humanity and this is the spirit of the Christmas, which people are celebrating during this time. It is observed as the time of giving when people make sure to remember the less fortunate ones and ensure that they too will have a great Christmas and New Year. There is a lot of satisfaction in giving, and Christmas gifts and surprise Santas are commonly seen during this period.
You may hear a lot of Christmas carols being sung and a variety of decorated Christmas trees all around. Christmas is the one festival that the Christians celebrate with such gaiety, in honor of their Lord Jesus Christ. The only other time happens to be at Easter when the Lord rises again after the crucifixion. The story of his birth is depicted in many ways using decorated cribs in homes as well as churches, during this period.
The Christmas Carol
The spirit of Christmas also has another side which most of us who have had literature lessons in school can identify with. The book titled “The Christmas Carol” by the famed Charles Dickens is a rather nice one, wherein a miser Ebenezer Scrooge, the protagonist is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, on the Christmas Eve.
This book truly brings out the Spirit of Christmas, as these spirits take Scrooge around to his childhood, to the happy family of his ex-fiancée, the market where people are joyously buying Christmas presents, his nephew’s Christmas party for which he refused the invite, teaches him about Want and Ignorance, and then the future where no one feels bad about his death if anything there were many who were happy about it. He was even shown his neglected grave. And this forces Scrooge to rethink his way of life. On Christmas morning, he wakes up and donates a significant amount to charity and the needy, and also spends the afternoon with his nephew Fred’s family. So, in essence, it says that the spirit of Christmas is all about sharing and caring and giving and that one should strive to keep it up in life.
The Mass and the Lunch
Christians would already have decorated their homes, invited their family and friends for a Christmas lunch and also made sure that they are touching lives somewhere. Churches too are decked up in the festive spirit, for the Christmas midnight Christmas mass that celebrates the birth of Jesus and talks about the learnings from his life. Love, light, hope, and peace are the learnings, and this is done by spreading the cheer in many ways, not just within the family, but to those outside, especially the not so happy and lucky ones.
The Christmas spirit extends till the New Year in the holiday season, and people get time to unwind and relax and spend time with their family. Many use it as an escape from the rigors faced through the year and prepare for the next. The Christmas Star is usually kept hanging till the New Year and is only taken down after that. So, make sure that you soak in the spirit of Christmas with your family, and also remember to play the Santa and light up others lives. Here is wishing a Merry Christmas to all and may the spirit of Christmas prevail over all of us.
