The inspiring story of a member as old as independent India

14 August, 2017

Independence Day
,

I Was born at LUDHIANA RAILWAY STATION in a refugee camp in the morning of 15th September. There was no medical facility and even the basic food for the family was scarce. My family was looted in Amritsar and we became pennyless. After few days a heavy Cholera epedemic struck in Ludhiana and as such our family lost two persons in this disease as there was no medical facility at that time.
We rushed to Delhi by Train. Our Train was stopped at Sonepat  and we were kept in a Refugee camp at CRA College at Sonepat.  Thus we stayed in Sonepat. We were penny less and had no work. We were trading in Cloth business and all the business were at Pakistan and the money etc., we brought were looted at Amritsar at Night from the Refugee camp. My family was starving and my parents had to work as labourer for our bread and butter. My Grand father become unconscious after seeing this situation.
After the refugee camp was closed, we had no house in Sonepat and even no house was provided to us and no landlord was ready to rent the house to our family.  My family took a shop at Rohtak road, sonepat and started the business of Halwai i.e. tea stall. None of the boys and girls could go to school as no money was available for payment of fees and other expenses of books etc. My father contracted TB in 1948 and was admitted in Irvin Hospital in Delhi. He spent full 2 years there and our financial position worsened.  We survived as our was a joint family. My father lost one lung in this war against TB.
In 1950, we purchased a house in Model Town Sonepat for Rs. 2700/- from Govt. of Punjab and started living there. I was admitted in a Govt School where the fees was 2 annas. I studied upto Matric with Ist Division, but due to financial crisis I could not continue my studies and then started earning livelihood. I became a rickshaw puller and other tiny jobs for earning of bread. After that I got admission to CRA college Sonepat and got my BA in 1965 where I was given full fee concession by the college with free books etc and NCC was kind to supply the uniforms to wear in the college.
I have seen all the changes of life , Rule of Congress Prime Minister Sh. Jawahar Lal nehru, Sh. Lal Bahaduir Shastri , Smt. Indira  Gandhi  and others till date. I joint the govt. job at AGCR in Feb.1967 as L.D.C. and then I left the job and Joined Bank of India in July.1970. I retired as Dy. Chief Manager from Kamla Nagar Branch Delhi in 2007  on 30.09.2007.
There are so many events happened from 1947 till date.
Still I am thankful to God for this act of kindness on me and my family.
With regards,
