Nobody likes boredom. Some of us may be more socially active than others, or some of us may prefer being alone more often, but none of these conditions define us. This is why we all need to build a community around us that could help us thrive and do things together.
Gone are the days of playing cards and indoor games. Seniors today, especially those living in larger cities have very different expectations from life in general and socialization in particular. Indeed, in countries in the west, senior recreation centers are shedding their names, and their identities, to evolve into a place where much more happens than just board games and hot food. Cities in India would do well to take a similar approach.
At the forefront of this endeavour in Bengaluru is Caveo, aiming to bring seniors together for a variety of physical activities each day of the week. For those who prefer quietude better, there are senior centers in Malleswaram that have book libraries and archives from several years past.
What would we be if we didn’t leverage the fact that everything is going digital these days. At Samarth, we’re trying to build a community. Here is where we hope you’ll be able to engage with like-minded people and perhaps make new friends. Other sites and apps such as Meetups help you create groups for specific interests. You can then add more seniors to the group and make plans to pursue a different activity each week.
When we speak of socializing and communities, how can we leave companionship far behind? It is true that as we grow old, we may find ourselves separated or widowed. This need not mean that we live out the rest of our lives alone- after all, we all thrive on company. A program called Senior Citizen Matrimony launched in Kolkata helps seniors fight depression and find partners who are a match for them. This is a testimony of changing societies wherein what were taboos a few years ago are accepted more openly now. We do hope that similar endeavours are started Pan-India.
If you’re not sure of how to begin building a community around you, just take the first step of talking to other seniors in the neighbourhood. From food walks to activities, treks, and trails, nothing is beyond you.
