Often, there is a strong perception in the minds of people that social media like Facebook, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Pinterest are only meant for the younger crowd. It is the young who are always on the phone, updating their details and posting selfies, as we see it. A recent statistic about Indian Facebook users suggests that there are only 0.6 million females and 1.8 million male Facebook users in the age group of 65 years and above. When you compare it with the 18 to 24 years age group, it shows 23.4 and 73.8 respectively for females and males. In another platform Instagram, the above 55+ users account for just 1% of its 43 million users. So, if you go by statistics, the perceptions seem to be true.
But then, we have also seen that there are many disruptors and path-breaking seniors, who are changing the scenarios. We have learned about a few seniors who have garnered millions of followers on YouTube, and also on Facebook. These people were introduced to these platforms by their family or friends and had quickly learned to use these platforms as a way of engaging with the society. And it is not just the older generation that follows these people, but also the younger generation.
The Instagram story
Instagram is a social media platform that is hugely popular, especially among the young. It is a photo and video sharing network that is owned by Facebook. Users can upload pictures and videos with hashtags, location, and many filters to make it relevant for those who search for specific information. There are many influencers on Instagram. It has become so popular that many brands have their page and use it to reach out to the people. Also, if you have many followers, then your Instagram page will also become very valuable for advertisers.
So, while there is only a small percentage of seniors using this site, those few are good enough to create a wave and make the news. There are a few who have been introduced to this site and are using it to enrich their lives as well as that of others and also enjoying it.
